Dr. Abraham Twerski's Twelve Steps to Healthy Self-Esteem
Serenity
You may be faced with many difficulties, problems, curve balls, and life is not fair stuff. But somehow you have learned to make friends with the issue and you call it a challenge. You look at life's curve balls as an opportunity to become a better hitter in the game called life. You don't take life, or yourself, so seriously, after all....you'll never get out of it alive. So what's your secret?
The secret of serenity in the face of life's static cling is a healthy ego. Well, you may be have been absent the day they gave those out, so where do you get some of it? You already have it inside in your being, your soul. You do have the ability to deal with the adversity. You do have the personal human capital and resources to deal with the challenge. Notice we are not talking about solving the challenge. No. Just deal with the issue. Sometimes you can problem solve. Other times you must learn to deal with, cope with or endure the situation. Adjust, adapt, make course changes....steer around the issue..and grow in personal character in the process.
Life is not a destination... it's a process. The purpose of life is to become the best person you can become. When you have this mental attitude then you can maintain serenity in the midst of adversity. Instead of allowing yourself to go into stress mode when faced with an issue...you stop , think and choose the attitude of: How can I grow through this? The key is take a deep breath and relax. Animals may react on instinct and go into defense mechanism mode. Not You.
Your inner voice tells you that you can deal with the issue at hand. You are going to use your free will to react to this challenge from a perspective of your inner healthy ego. You are not going to react in your usual, knee jerk, I can't handle this mode. You have the ability, competence and human resources to deal with this. dig deep into your spiritual self...your life force...your karma....your inner generator...and smile at the challenge...and say: "let's figure this out".
