Dr. Abraham Twerski's Twelve Steps to Healthy Self-Esteem
Worry
"What will happen if she doesn't like me? What if my car breaks down on the way? What if I lose my job ... how will I pay the rent? What if the client doesn't like my presentation? What if I mess up?""
These everyday fears cloud your mind and put you in a constant state of impending doom. It's as if you are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Your heart races, you feel tightness of the chest, hot flushes, profuse sweating and and shaking hands. And all this because of what you are thinking may happen ...Yes. The mind is very powerful.
This type of worry is based on a seemingly realistic fear that may very well happen in your everyday life. There is an apparent reason for your fears because these things do happen to people. The thing is ... they haven't happened yet ... and may not ever happen. I know, I know ... but they could happen. Since this anxiety is based on a real possibility it is a known fear and can be dealt with. It can? You bet.
Your usual fear-worry-anxiety pattern is the only one you know. It's been with you as long as you can remember. It preys upon your feelings of low self-esteem. Since you feel you are inadequate, inferior and not a capable person you have trained yourself to expect to fail. You may withdraw from relationships or give up at work because ... what's the point? I am just useless. This faulty thinking pattern has been your cognitive process. But it is unwarranted and just plain wrong. It has tricked you into thinking you can't handle the challenge of everyday living. Your negative self-image is the underlying cause of your faulty thinking and your anxiety.
When you feel your mind beginning to race ... you have free choice to tell your mind to stop racing. Would you allow a stranger into your home and allow him to set up shop in your living room, take over your TV remote control and your fridge and start to give you orders? Of course not. Well that is what you are doing when you allow your mind to come into your being and start telling you how things are about to fall apart. Get outta here! You can't tell ME what to think. You can't make me nervous, worried and anxious about an imagined event which has not happened and may not ever happen!
Just take a deep breath and say, "Who is in charge here?" You are. All unwarranted visiting thoughts are asked to leave. But what if they do happen? Maybe the visiting worrying thoughts are right? Then what? Then you will deal with it! Think back ... weren't you once in a similar crisis situation? Didn't you actually handle it? Didn't things basically work out? You have the emotional antibodies with which to deal with this type of psychological bacteria. Well then, dig deep into your being/psyche/soul and draw upon your already existing strengths ... your courage, perseverance, creativity, resilience and inner resolve ... and deal with it.
